Twenty-Two

By the time Ordella had been detained in the room long enough to have removed her cloak from the glowstones seven times, she’d fallen into a monotonous routine. After returning light to the room, she’d use the now close-to-overflowing chamber pot in the corner of the room farthest from her bed, drink a cupped handful of water from the bath, and bang on the door five hundred times or until the ache in her fist became too much to bear, whichever occurred first.

After that, she’d walk over to the first wall hanging, and begin saying the names of the Shrouded depicted along the bottom edge of the fabric. She’d managed to remember the names of six of them from the meeting, and she’d named the remaining ones herself based on their physical appearance.

“The Wayfarer, The Twins, The Knight, The Bard, The Boatman, The Hunter, The Lord and the Underling, The Tall Man, The Child, The Spearmaiden, and The Smith,” Ordella recited the list again.

Her stomach growled and she rubbed it. All of the weight she’d gained being bed-bound in Gilmar had dropped off. Her ribs were now starting to show more prominently through her skin, and she was beginning to find even simple tasks taxing and tiring.

To make matters worse, her water supply was nearly halfway gone, and her desire to gulp down what remained in an attempt to slake her thirst and satisfy her raging hunger was almost overwhelming.

“The Wayfarer, The Twins, The Knight, The Bard, The Boatman, The Hunter, The Lord and the Underling, The Tallman, The Child, The Spearmaiden, and The Smith.”

Ordella studied the images carefully, absorbing every detail.

“The Wayfarer, The Twins, The Knight, The Bard, The Boatman, The Hunter, The Lord and the Underling, The Tallman, The Child, The Spearmaiden, and The Smith.”

Using the wall as support, she headed back to the door and started to bang on it again. If her captivity wasn’t a test, she didn’t want to miss any opportunity to attract someone’s attention. A passerby perhaps, or a visitor to the house. If it was a test, the racket she made throughout the day probably wouldn’t convince Vayla to unlock the door sooner than she’d planned, but at least she’d be forced to remember Ordella was still there.

She flicked her eyes over to the pale blue wall hanging. The woman in the boat wore a determined expression on her face. She wasn’t giving in meekly, and neither would Ordella.
